From Granny Norbag to Hidden Men CIC: How Launchpad helped build a resilient and sustainable creative enterprise

Malcolm J Hogan

The beginning of an exciting journey for a creative business

Malcolm connected with Launchpad in 2018 after completing his debut children’s book, Granny Norbag and the Naughty Pirates. With Launchpad’s guidance, he self‑published, marketed the book and sold out the initial print run. This support helped lay the foundations for long‑term creative and commercial growth.

“Launchpad gave me the practical guidance I needed to turn my first book into a viable creative business.”

The continued growth of Granny Norbag

Over the next two years, Malcolm released three more books, sold more than 5,000 copies, and developed Granny Norbag into a touring puppet show, radio programme and a series of school workshops. With support from Launchpad, Arts Council England and Help Musicians, he created a short film with filmmaker and Launchpad associate Wayne Sables, which led to four sold‑out performances at the 2024 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Launchpad’s support during tough times

Launchpad also played a pivotal role during periods of personal and professional challenge. When Covid halted Malcolm’s income, Launchpad helped him adapt his work. In 2021, after becoming a full‑time carer for his wife, continued support enabled Malcolm to reshape his creative practice and sustain his business.

“Launchpad’s steady guidance has been a constant thread through every stage of my journey. They’ve helped me grow, adapt and keep creating, even in the most challenging times.”

The development of Hidden Men CIC

This resilience led to the development of Hidden Men, an Arts Council‑funded audio drama exploring the experiences of male unpaid carers.

With national media attention and an all‑star cast including Alan Fletcher (Neighbours), Toby Foster (BBC Radio Sheffield), Scott Wright (Coronation Street), Matthew James Morrison (EastEnders) and Ryan Mulvey (Hollyoaks), the production has already gained local and national media coverage, including BBC Radio Sheffield.

The audio drama is the first public milestone in what is intended to become a longer term social impact initiative rooted in Rotherham. The project has now grown into Hidden Men CIC, which uses storytelling to support carers and strengthen communities.
